Nintendo’s presence at last month’s Gamescom in Cologne drew significant attention, with public attendees given the opportunity to experience titles like Pikmin 4 and Super Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. However, discreetly concealed behind these showcased games it seems as though Nintendo may have showcased its upcoming Switch 2 console to the press.

Nintendo Switch 2 Showcased to Press at Gamescom 2023

In confidential sessions, Nintendo presented a behind-the-scenes look at its forthcoming console, tentatively named the Switch 2, to industry partners. According to Eurogamer, the closed-door developer presentations shed light on the technical capabilities and potential of the upcoming system.

A standout from these private demonstrations was a technical showcase featuring an upgraded version of the Nintendo Switch’s debut title, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This modified edition was engineered to leverage the enhanced hardware of the Switch 2. It should be noted this demonstration was solely intended to exhibit the system’s capabilities, with no indication of an actual game release.

While Nintendo has not yet divulged specifics about its next-generation console, industry expectations point to a potential launch in 2024, as recent reports suggest. Information indicates that development kits for the Switch 2 have already been distributed to key partners.

Despite the buzz surrounding the Switch 2, Nintendo is still full speed ahead in offering a robust game lineup for the current Nintendo Switch throughout the remainder of 2023 and the early part of 2024. On the horizon are titles such as Super Mario Bros. Wonder, a Super Mario RPG remake, and a new WarioWare installment by year-end. In 2024, Nintendo plans to release a new Princess Peach game and a port of Luigi’s Mansion 2. Meanwhile, the highly anticipated Metroid Prime 4 still carries a “To Be Announced” release date.
